These are from Clark Miller's show last month @ The Salon in Costa Mesa. I think if I had some coffee and it wasn't late I'd be more apt to writing something right now, but forgive me, I'd rather get the pix up and chat later. By all means, leave a comment or two at the bottom and let Clark know what you think of the work; he's definitely been at it.

Also, I think it bears noting that I take pictures of people and places; this is not a straight take on Clark's work as much as it is his work in the actual context of the Salon. This is a show with people standing in front of paintings. How do people look in front of paintings? What is the interplay between the painting that has been elevated - physically to the wall and metaphorically by calling it "art" - and the people who surround it? How do these paintings change their surroundings? I only ask these questions because I take photos as a record of time and place and I like to paint; these things are on my mind.

I think we can assume that:

1. All paintings are intended to be viewed.
2. Every viewing of a painting creates an intellectual exchange between viewer and subject.
3. Content is immutable. There can be nothing more in a painting than what is on the surface.
4. Meaning can change as the context in which the painting is presented is altered.
5. Value is indeterminable and is based on personal interpretation of content and meaning.
6. Narrative can change value & meaning, but not context or content.

So.

What is in Clark's paintings?

What is the context in which they are presented?

Is there a narrative - spoken, written or other - that affects the paintings?

The only question that I will answer here is that relating to the content of the paintings; the rest is in constant flux and you can answer on your own.

Clark makes paintings with people in them. With few exceptions, the subjects are alone and are looking "off-camera", which is to say they are unaware of the viewer's presence. I think it is safe to say the subjects are pondering questions that they themselves are unaware of the answer. These aren't angst-ridden thoughts, but rather brief moments that seem to have stopped the subjects in whatever it was they were doing; something has crossed their mind and they have been captivated by an idea that has made their physicality a momentary afterthought. That said, I would say that they are both aware of themselves as mortals while seeing something far greater at the periphery of their vision.

As viewers, Clark has given us the privilege of watching these subjects in these rare moments. He has carefully edited out any references to time or place, which allows us to focus on the ponderous idea. I like that. I think Clark makes paintings about ideas, not people.

Guess I didn't need that coffee after all.

I attended Tom Curran's art opening the other night at The Living Room Salon & Art Gallery in Costa Mesa; it was a good event. Figurative artists, Clark Miller & Richard Starke were on hand as well as NYC-based photographer, Brett Macaulay, and some new people to me including Cody Lusby, whose work I was just turned on to.

Henry was on hand from the Laguna Culinary Arts' Cheese & Wine Shop, providing excellent service and artisanal cheeses, though there was a brie on hand that whose funk was wide and high. Heidi Barrette of Relish Cooking helped pour champagne between strolls through the gallery with Tom's son Holden, who by the way, sold his only painting in the show! Right on, Holden!

Thanks for the work, Tom, and thanks to The Salon for hosting the show.

Here are some pix from the event:

I'm working on a CD cover for a good friend of mine, Gidon Shikler. His band name is "The Rockrites" and the album name is "Deeper Groove"... the record release party is this coming Feb 10th @ 9:30pm at the Mint in LA... should be a rockin' affair....

Anyways... I put together a website for him @ www.therockrites.com and did the poster illustration... I used Impact Marketing for the printing and they did a stellar job... had them run @ 11"x17" and UV coated on nice thick stock... came out super cool... Gidon and I were talking about doing the CD cover artwork and I thought it would be a great idea to hand print them with linoleum blocks... Here's where I'm at in the process:

Prepping the stinky brown-black ink

CD Covers that I blocked a few nights ago in blue getting ready for type work

Fresh cover laid out for printing

Getting the brayer inked

Inking the linoleum block for the cover's backplate

Got the linoleum on the cover and the baren ready to smash

Press, press, smash, mash.

New gradient colors.

Just rolled out the backplate and was left with some lettering on the brayer.

I'm really stoked on the strange, rock-like textures that were created as the blocks were pulled up... totally unexpected... I guess I didn't know what to expect, really... For the record, I used water-based Speedball block printing inks from the online art-supply store, www.dickblick.com; I used black, light red, yellow, blue and white inks. For the linoleum, I used Dick Blick's"Blick's Golden-Cut Linoleum" and cut it with Speedball's linoleum cutting set.

I printed them on plain white gatefold CD covers that I got from http://www.sleevetown.com. Because the CD covers were glossy, however, I had to sand them down a bit to give the surface some texture to hold the ink... took a couple of hours, but was necessary. Next time, I think I'm going to seek out un-coated covers so I don't have the hassle.

Here are two finished covers I scanned the next day:

Enjoy!

Catlenburg F.B.L. Ambthauss
Decorative view of Katlenburg-Lindau

I love engravings, particularly 17th and 18th century copper and steel landscape engravings. Works from that period have a certain quality about them that is unmistakable - they speak of the fantastic, the spiritual, and the unknown. There is a theatrical quality to the imagery, and rightly so – this was the emergent language of communication. Also – and this is one of the reasons I love this period - not only were the landscapes beautiful, you could throw Pan and Jesus into the same picture and get away with it. People in London would say, “Well, that’s how it is in Vienna. They may not get along philosophically, but Jesus and Pan both love sheep. And wine. And who doesn’t love an expansive view of the sea roiling with strange creatures?” This was the new travel brochure. This was how you expressed the Leviathan to the sailor and the devil to the convert.

Beyond the theatricality of the imagery, there is a sense of seeking the divine, that the artist could actually render the natural world as it was, and perhaps, even better than it presented itself. More idyllic. Super-natural.

If you don’t know much about the engraving process, it involves taking a small needle (a “graver”), usually with a wooden handle attached, and carving in reverse onto a metal plate, typically of copper or steel. The plate is then inked, the remaining ink wiped away and paper and plate are pressed through a roller, bringing the reverse to life as a black or brown positive. Suffice it to say, it is very difficult to make these things, and they are intense labors of love. There is no margin for error, and it takes the rare combination of visionary and craftsman to pull it off. So, when I see an engraving that works on multiple levels – line weight, composition, subject matter, surface, the lettering and process, I can’t help but be amazed, humbled, frustrated and ultimately thankful for the gift of the vision passed along.

So, who wouldn't be nuts about these things, right? Every once in while, I’ll do an ebay search for "steel engravings"; usually I find portraits of American presidents done in the late 19th century, and a smattering of European and American landscapes - all wonderful things, and I can appreciate them for their line work and fastidiousness, but I was in the mood for some far-out, Pan-and-Jesus-atop-the-same-hill-overlooking-a-battle-of-horned-women-fighting-over-garlands-of-roses thing. I haven’t found it yet, but I’m sure its out there. If you find it, or something like it, by all means, buy it and then give it to me. I will be a friend for life.

I was sure I was going to be disappointed, until I stumbled on this ebayer's shop - Antiqua Leipzig GMBH. These people are flush with copper engravings from the 17th century. Landscapes, people, gods, crests & maps. The good stuff. The fantastic stuff.

I bid on a few, and lost all bets. Though I lost the bids, I noticed that the cityscapes I was bidding on were from a serious collection of works done by either one person or tight group of engravers from a highly disciplined school. Who was this artist and how in God’s name did he have the drive to do something like this? Google, yo.

The engravings I bid on were pages removed from a collection of works called the Suecia antiqua et hodierna, or in Swedish archivist Magdalena Gram's words, "The literary, scientific and cultural magnum opus - Suecia antiqua et hodierna - a work of distinction from Sweden's period as a great power."

The Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna was largely the work of a Swede named Erik Dahlbergh, and there is an excellent site devoted exclusively to the collection of works here.

“Early 1660's saw Dahlbergh begin his work on what he called "topographien", later to become Suecia antiqua et hodierna. On March 28, 1661 he was accorded royal privilege for his planned work on Sweden and its provinces. During the following decade Dahlbergh mainly depicted scenes from Stockholm and from the countryside surrounding Lake Mälaren. He visited Paris in 1667-68 to head the work of transferring his sketches, some of them for the Suecia, to engravings. On his return from Paris in 1669 he was appointed commander of Malmö and in 1674 put in charge of general quarters and the fortification. In 1678 he became commander of Kristianstad and the following year witnessed the Treaty of Lund.”

I’ll let you finish the exploration and read up on the works yourself. Users can download small scans from the site for free or order massive digital scans. My thanks to the Swedes for digitizing the work and offering it back to humanity for perusal; now that is tax money well spent.

Before the eLabel shoot, David Ferrell and I scouted eLabel's studio space and building... I couldn't believe it... they had a space on the fourth or fifth floor... can't even remember... wasn't really important because once we hit the roof of the building, all bets were off... it was stunning... Downtown LA right in front of us, the 10 freeway right below us, the Fashion District behind us... the aesthetic was perfect...

David had this great idea about shooting a panorama from the rooftop, and doing it from pre-dawn to post-dusk, over the course of a single day. I thought it was a brilliant idea, and we did a test-shoot that day... it came out great...

Then, of course, not wanting to make it simple, David suggested we move the panorama slowly throughout the day to keep it interesting. "Ok, why not?" I thought. We worked out the steps forward and backward, made our calculations and decided to shoot a pano every two hours.

The intention was to use the panorama as a backdrop for an illustration for eLabel to use on their website, marketing, print, etc... The final site used a portion of the pano, but the entire piece, stitched together by Zack @ the collectiv came out insane. It needs to be cleaned up, but for what it is, its great.

Here's a link to the panorama in its entirety:

Rooftop Panorama

So, with the panorama in mind, an illustration wasn't far behind.

I had been thinking about the whole idea of eLabel's deconstruction methods of rebuilding its clothes. I like the idea. Eric and his minions go out, harvest forgotten cloth, restitch it, repurpose it and make it anew. I love it. I love the ethos and the love that goes into it... you can really feel it when you're holding one of his pieces... So with the idea of recycling and repurposing in mind, I roughed out an illustration for the site.

Here's a link to the complete illustration:

eLabel Illustration

Though it wasn't used, I think it was successful even for a brief moment. It wasn't what David and I had discussed exactly, and it needed to be beaten apart and put back together, but, unfortunately, I had a lot on my plate and had to let it go. Maybe I'll give it another go.

I've finally had some time to go through the photos from a shoot I did in March 2006. Wow. Long time ago. Thanks to the kick-ass people who helped out that day, namely, Rob Dorsey, Dave Donaldson, my niece Vail Barrette, & her boyfriend Joey and Zack designer-turned-stage-hand. Unfortunatley, I can't remember the names of the few other crucial people who handled hair, makeup, & styling (Heather?). Oh, and of course, the models. Simply stunning.

The clothing line is designed by Eric Munoz. Josiah River is in the mix there a couple times - he helps fund the line. David Ferrell produced the shoot and provided excellent direction for the day.

What's up, taco people? Thanks for coming over to our casa the other night... was super nice having everybody over. Thanks to everybody who put some paint on the canvas...special thanks to guest star "Spyder" for doing the canwork on the canvas. Which leads me to my next point.

Thanks to everybody for letting me paint over their work. Remember, people, its about process. Buff doctor is not only in the house, he lives there. Of course, had it turned out nice nice, buff doctor would be sellin' it for cash money American to pay for the next party. The next one we'll webcast the process and people can pay to have the painting stopped, at which point, I'll roll it up and mail it to them.

Know when to fold 'em.

Hey. Here's the best part: time lapse photography with some select tunes de la noche. Be sure to have your speakers on, or it'll be like eating a burrito with beans only. And no carne. Estupido move, especially when it's all dialed in for your enjoyment.

Here is my salsa bar of bandwidth/size options. Only with video. Not tomatoes.

Now eat:
